Gabriella Knight was a vision in mint green, twirling before her full-length mirror to check the flow of her maxi dress before heading out. She felt perfect, until a scuffling sound from the floor ruined the moment. Frowning, she crouched down, her long dark hair cascading over her shoulder. "What is this?" she muttered, squinting at the carpet. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Oh my god." There, by the skirting board, was a crew of tiny, shrunken workmen, busily digging a hole in her carpet.
"Helloo? Hellooo?" she called out, her voice booming over them. "Can you hear me? What the hell are you doing there?" The tiny men ignored her, focused on their miniature destruction. Gabriella’s confusion hardened into annoyance. "You've dug a hole in my floor? Can you leave please? Helloo?"
Silence.
Gabriella sighed. If they wouldn't listen to reason, they would listen to gravity. She stood up, her black patent Louboutin pumps gleaming like obsidian blades. She lifted her foot and brought the sharp stiletto heel down with a sickening crunch, ending the excavation instantly. She ground the survivors into the carpet, testing the durability of her soles against their tiny bodies.
But the heels felt too detached. She wanted a more personal confirmation that the work had stopped. She slipped off her pumps, revealing her pale, bare feet. She pressed her soft soles over the wreckage, smothering the last of the crew under her arches, feeling every snap and pop. Finally, she plucked the foreman from the disaster zone. "You really should have gotten a permit," she whispered, a cruel smile playing on her lips. She popped the tiny man into her mouth, swallowed him whole, and checked her teeth in the mirror. The site was cleared. Time to go out.
