John claimed to have a dodgy knee and asked Bonnie if she would mind climbing the ladder and adjusting the clock.

She knew that she was dressed inappropriately but knew John to be thoroughly respectable and would not take advantage, ( I can't imagine how she came to that conclusion !! ) She should have been suspicious when he insisted on holding the ladder still while she climbed up it.

By the time the penny had dropped, she knew she had been compromised and could do nothing about it. She had some sympathy for John's feigned discomfort and feeling generous she put on a display that she knew he would appreciate as she descended, [memories of Benny Hill as a fireman sprung to mind.] She straightened her dress and tried to regain both her composure and reputation.
